STUDY GUIDE

The manuscript page

A manuscript is both a text-bearing object and a record of materials, craft and use. Begin with what the museum catalogue actually records: date, medium, provenance and any uncertainty in the attribution.

Your study session

  1. Open the Met’s Quran folio catalogue.
  2. Identify one feature of the script and one feature of the page arrangement.
  3. Distinguish a catalogue fact from an observation you made yourself.

Reading and resources

Bring your learning to the classroom

Use the activity to prepare one specific question. Keep the source reference attached to any quotation, distinguish your observations from the author’s claims, and agree on a next step with your teacher.
